Mongolia has been requested
to participate in preventing money laundering from Afghan-grown heroin.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation in Kyrgyzstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed
creation of a zone of countries, including Mongolia, to actively work
to stop money laundering as a step to counter drug trafficking.
Putin said to assure stability
in Afghanistan, all SCO members must strive to end the dominance of
heroin production in Afghanistan.
"It is essential to continue
forming anti-drug security belts around Afghanistan, which could be
complemented with financial security belts supervised by SCO financial
monitors. This will improve the effectiveness of measures to counter
both drug trafficking and money laundering," observed Putin.
The World Drug Report notes
that Afghanistan is responsible for the growth of 90 percent of the
world's illegal opium production. Heroin is produced from opium poppys.
The SCO meeting is being attended
by heads of states and governments from Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Additionally, Iran, Pakistan, India and Mongolia
are present there as observers. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been
invited to the summit as a special guest.
