The political tremors from
last week’s ouster of Prime Minister M. Enkhbold as party chief continued
into this week.
Reports from within the Mongolia
Revolutionary People's Party (MRPP) indicate that members have voted
to remove Prime Minister Enkhbold and replace him with new party chairman
Sanjaa Bayar.
Bayar had won the election
last week to become new party chairman.
During the party conference,
critics from within the party accused Enkhbold’s government of being
corrupt, practicing deception and political favoritism. These same critics
claim the government had allowed real estate speculation, suffered from
a lack of transparency in the central bank, and had caused an artificial
appreciation of Mongolia’s currency, the tugrug, against the dollar.
However, Enkhbold praised his
government for continuing Mongolia’s economic growth, reaching 8.4
percent in 2006, improving the country’s infrastructure and decreasing
joblessness.
Party officials have said that
Sanjaa Bayar received 377 votes in the leadership struggle while Enkhbold
collected 229 votes.
As the MRPP holds a majority
of seats in the Mongolian Parliament, Bayar could form a new government
without a coalition.
