Mongolia’s yearly dust storms,
which spread pollutants to South Korea and Japan, were the subject of
discussions on Tuesday when environment ministers gathered in Japan
for discussions.
Japanese Environment Minister
Ichiro Kamoshita is hosting three days of talks with his South Korean
counterpart Lee Kyoo-Yong and Chinese vice-environment chief Li Ganjie
in the central Japanese city of Toyama.
Called yellow dust, sand blowing
from Mongolia and China poses an environmental problem for Japan and
South Korea.
Last year Japan offered to
provide $8 million for the monitoring of yellow dust storms.
Researchers believe the size
and frequency of Mongolian yellow dust storms have been increasing due
in part to deforestation, desertification and other environmental problems.
