UAE creates regulations, monitors to protect foreign workers

The United Arab Emirates is
taking steps to protect the rights of Mongolian workers employed in
their country.

In a move which could become
a model for other countries, the UAE has finalized an agreement with
ten Asian countries they currently accept foreign workers from, including
Mongolia.

The agreement outlines the
rights of the workers within the UAE, the responsibilities of employers
and also streamlines the procedures for entering the country and traveling
within the country.

Additionally, the United Arab
Emirates has announced it will establish bureaus in the cooperating
countries to assure workers understand procedures to enter the UAE as
well as their rights as foreign workers.

Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi,
UAE Minister of Labor, said yesterday, “The opening of such bureaus
is a necessity to streamline the labor movement among the countries
in the region. It is part of the ministry’s strategy to coordinate
with the authorities concerned in the labor-exporting countries to help
protect the rights of workers.”

Additionally, the UAE will
create 700 inspection teams to assure employers with foreign workers
are abiding by safety and other employment regulations.

Lastly, these and other issues
arising from hosting foreign workers will be discussed in the UAE when
it hosts the Ministerial Consultation on Overseas Employment and Contractual
Labor for Countries of Origin and Destination in Asia, known as the
Colombo Process, in Abu Dhabi on January 21-22.

Besides Mongolia, countries
participating in this program include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal,
Sri Lanka, Indonesia, China, Thailand, and the Philippines.
