Mongolians gather to protest rising food prices

Ulaanbaatar was the scene of
a Friday protest when 20,000 Mongolians voiced outrage over enormous
jumps in the cost of basic foods.

Organized by the Mongolian
Confederation of Trade Unions, union president S. Ganbaatar told the
crowd, "We demand that the government of Mongolia take concrete
action to stop rising consumer prices which enrich a few companies and
make lives of thousands of Mongolians unbearable."

Ganbaatar said the cost of
a 55-pound bag of flour, now selling for $21.40, had been only $7.70
four months ago.

As a result of such price increased,
the cost of a loaf of bread increased by 50 percent last week.
