Vatican announces new representative to Mongolia

Mongolia, which may be the
country with the world’s smallest Catholic population, has a new representative
of the Vatican.

It was announced last week
that Archbishop Asvaldo Padilla will become the new Apostolic Nunzio
in Mongolia. A Fillipino, Archbishop Padilla took over the Mongolian
responsibilities when he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea.

Catholic church publications
estimate the number of Catholics in Mongolia at 415, with 70 baptisms
occurring in 2007.

The church also sponsors 64
missioners from 18 countries working in Mongolia. Additionally, there
are six lay missioners working in the country.

There are two Catholic parishes
in Ulaabaatar, Saints Peter and Paul, and Saint Mary's, Good Shepherd.
A third parish, Mary Help of Christians, is located in Mongolia’s
second largest city, Darhan.

Personally I think there are more Roman Catholics in Mongolia and also among the expats in Mongolia (like myself) but there is no central registration so many of us are not counted. Also the Roman Catholics do their charity works without much noise or pressure to the people to change their religion. Very unlike some other Christian churches here...
