Plans for Ulaanbaatar golf course met by protesters

Local residents are protesting
plans for creating a golf course near Ulaanbaatar.

The Tuul River Countryside
Company seeks to build a golf course along the Tuul River basin at Gachuurt
Village in Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar city.

However, local residents organized
a press conference on Tuesday to object to the plan. An unnamed protester
told reporters, ''A number of dignitaries support the company's setting
up of the golf course by breaking state law, peeling off earth and destroying
the forest and pasture.”

However, Tuul River Countryside
Vice Director, B.Narmandakh, has said no harm will be caused to the
surrounding environment by establishing the golf course and will, in
fact, bring development to the region.

Protesters also appealed to
NGOs and individuals to prevent any damage the golf course might cause
to the Tuul River, which provides drinking water to the city.

Clean and high quality water supply is also in the interest of any golf course. Maybe it is a good idea to bring all people together at a round table conference and draft a memorandum between the authorities, communities, company and an independent NGO for verification. So that instead of continuous argumentations all parties could unit to ensure maintaining nature and the quality of drinking water and at the same time to support the local economy to prosper.
