Scientists using high-tech in search for 13th century tomb of Chinggis Khaan

American scientists are in
Mongolia and searching for the tomb of Chinggis Khaan.

"As outrageous as it might
sound, we're looking for the tomb of Chinggis Khaan," Dr. Albert
Yu-Min Lin, an affiliated researcher for UCSD's Center for Interdisciplinary
Science in Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3), said in a statement
to the Xinhua news agency.

Lin is part of a team of scientists
from the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information
Technology working on the project in northeastern Mongolia.

They have brought advanced
visualization and analytical technologies available to try to pinpoint
the burial tomb.

Historians believe Khaan’s
grave is located in an area bordered by Mongolia's Onon River and the
Khaan khentii mountains near his birthplace in Khentii Aimag.

Khaan died in 1277.

Some $800,000 has been set
aside for the three-year project. Eight researchers are currently involved
in the search for the tomb.
