Consumer price index seen increasing in past year

Recently released figures show Mongolia’s consumer price index increased 18.2 percent in the past year.

Further, the National Statistics Commission of Mongolia said the consumer price index increased 0.6 percent from January to February of this year.

Officials said the price of food and beverages increased by 1.8 percent and alcohol and tobacco went up by 2.5 percent. Officials said these products greatly contributed to the overall rise in prices.

At the same time, the cost of education, communications, restaurants and hotels were stable, while the price of housing, water, electricity and fuel decreased 1.2 percent. There was also a 2.7 percent decrease in the cost for transportation.

Officials noted that in February the consumer price index decreased by 0.1-1.5 percent in Ulaanbaatar, Bayan-Olgii, Bulgan, Dornogobi, Khovd and Ovorkhangai aimags. In the rest of the aimags, consumer prices increased by 0.2-4.6 percent as opposed to January.
