250,000 animal deaths reported in two months in Mongolia

Mongolian LivestockAnimal deaths during the first two months of 2009 were lower than in the same period last year.

Government figures indicate that 257,800 adult animals have been lost during January and February, 2009. Many of these losses were due to winter storms.

Figures show that the dead animals included 139,700 goats, 91,700 sheep, 17,600 cattle, 8,500 horses and 300 camels.

This is a decrease by 40,000 heads, or 13.4 percent, compared with the same period in 2008.

Broken down by aimags, animals deaths were as follows: Zavkhan (25.6%), Bayan-Olgii (16.9%), Uvs (15.6%), Khovd (8.8%), Khovsgol (8.4%), Govi-Altai (6.3%) and Bayankhongor (4.9%).
