President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan has arrived in Ulaanbaatar yesterday. He will be in Mongolia for a 2 day official visit.
Rahmon has been in power since 1992, surviving a civil war in the 1990's. He wrote a book called The Tajiks in the Mirror of History, in which he describes his personal views on Tajiki history. Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and has performed the hajj when he went to Mecca in March 1997. He has called for closer ties with other Muslim nations in the region. He changed his name, dropping of the Russian -ov suffix in 2007.
Tajikistan is a Central Asian country that came into existence after the collops of the Soviet Union. Before it had been considired a part of Uzbekistan. Tajikistan was considered the poorest country in Central Asia following a civil independence war in 1991.
Tajikistans Economy is driven by aluminium production, cotton growing and remittances from migrant workers. State-owned Talco is the biggest aluminium plant in Central Asia and one of the biggest in the world. Additionally Tajikistan has great hydropower potential, and has focused on attracting investment for projects for internal use and electricity exports.
