Former prime-minister Ts. Elbegdorj has secured the presidential nomination for the Democratic Party. He will run against incubent president Enkhbayar, who is he candidate for the MPRP. Elbegdorj has been prime minister twice, but for less than 4 years all together. The party nominated him with 60 percent of the votes. Less than a year ago, after the July 1st riots that same party had ousted him as its leader. Popular opinion turned partly against him for his part in the riots. The controversial choice of Elbegdorj makes clear how few appealing leaders the democratic party has. His terms as prime minister always followed an ellection were he was not the actual party leader. Rather he was in the formation period assigned as a compromise between different fractions. The 2008 parliamentary election was the first to see him run as party leader. He was widely critised for his reaction to the dissapointing results for the Democratic Party.
His opponent Enkhbayar was speaker of parliament during Elbegdorj second term as prime minister in 2004. Enkhbayar was minister of culture from 1992 and prime minister from 2000, with 4 years of opposition in between. He had a short period as speaker of parliament before becoming the third president of Mongolia in 2005. A reelection in the coming elections would be his first time to hold a second term in a major public office.
