Today was the final day of the Mongolian Democratic Party’s
convention here in Ulaanbaatar. Over 1,450 people attended the final
day and voted for the new leader of the party. Elbegdorj won with 57.2%
percent of the vote (the first vote had 4 candidates and was held
friday night, but none of the members received over 50% of the vote.
Hence the vote was reheld today between Elbegdorj and E. Bat-Uul, the
two who had received 46% and 40%, respectively, on Friday). The

Elbegdorj was the Prime Minister of Mongolia until the coalition
collapse in January of this year. He has been in politics for over 17
years and was one of the leaders in the early 1990s who helped Mongolia
enter the realm of democracy. Elbegdorj has had a record of fighting
for “transparency” in the Mongolian government, free speech and the
freedom of the press/media.
