Parliament in Breach of Election Law

Last week on May 18, the General Election Committee stated that the election for Parliament district 46 should be held on July 2, 2006. This was in accordance with Article 42 of the Mongolia’s election laws:

A re-election is to be announced within 14 days and held within 45 days from the date of an MP’s relief.

Yet once the date is set by the GEC, it must be confirmed by Parliament before it can take place. Today the Open Society Forum reported that Ts. Nyamdorj, the Speaker of Parliament, has accepted the breach of the law and sided with other MPRP MPs:

Recently, the MPRP MP Ts. Sukhbaatar proposed to
postpone the re-election in this district until September 03, 2006 and
the MPRP MPs in Parliament supported this proposal.
