Reports out of London indicate
China’s largest nuclear power plant contractor is in discussions with
Mongolia to purchase additional uranium.
China National Nuclear Corp.
(CNNC) is attempting to head off a domestic shortage in uranium by seeking
outside sources.
China National Nuclear Corp.
is the major developer of nuclear power plants in China. It is also
one of the key players in assuring China achieves its goal of supplying
four percent of the country’s electricity using nuclear power by 2020.
Lui Xuehong, Vice President
of the CNNC's overseas uranium exploration unit, told the Power &
Alternative Energy Summit in London that besides seeking Mongolian uranium,
he has been charged with beginning discussions with uranium suppliers
in Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Chad and the Central
African Republic.
China is reported to have allocated
an additional $52 billion for building domestic nuclear reactors to
generate power.
