Government sends observers to Malaysia for murder trial of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu
Tuesday, 05 June 2007
Mongolian justice and foreign
affairs officials have arrived in Kuala Lumpur to act as observers at
the trial of Malaysian officials accused of murdering 28 year-old Mongolian,
Altantuya Shaariibuu.
A statement released by the
Mongolian foreign ministry last week said, “We do hope the court procedures
will be fair and free from political influence.”
Shaariibuu was murdered last
October. Following an investigation, two policemen were arrested along
with Abdul Razak Baginda, a political analyst with close ties to deputy
prime minister Najib Razak.
The arrested policemen were
part of a unit of police bodyguards for top political officials.
Investigators believe Shaariibuu
may have had a relationship with Baginda prior to her murder.
Among the many witnesses who
will testify at the trial are the Mongolian victim’s father, Shaariibuu
Setev, who has arrived in Malaysia along with three relatives.
