China monitors border countries, including Mongolia, for outbreaks of avian flu PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 June 2007
China has offered Mongolia continuing assistance to assure avian flu does not pose a threat to humans or livestock.

The veterinary department of China’s Ministry of Agriculture has been closely monitoring Mongolia, as well as other nations sharing borders with China, for outbreaks of avian flu.

Additionally, China itself has broken its decades-long habit of secrecy to actively cooperate with international organizations trying to check the outbreaks of avian flu.

Recently, China’s Ministry of Agriculture donated $900,000 US worth of vaccinations for Indonesia’s poultry.

Additionally, China keeps a close eye on Vietnam, where fourteen of the country’s 64 provinces have had outbreaks of avian flu. Since 2003, 95 cases of human avian flu have been reported in Vietnam, causing 42 fatalities.

Beginning in 2005, China has provided Vietnam with 900 million vaccinations for its poultry. It also continues to send experts to assist the Vietnamese in preventing an avian flu epidemic.
