China has specifically outlined
the types of actions Mongolia, as well as surrounding countries must
take, to greatly increase cross-border trade.
During a meeting of the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) in St. Petersburg last week, Chinese
Vice Premier Wu Yi spoke of decreasing bureaucracy and increasingly
opening borders to benefit the economies of SCO members.
Wu Yi recommended measures
to pick up the pace of regional cooperation, particularly in building
roads, telecommunications, electric power grids and rail travel.
During the organization’s
meeting, Wu Yi also suggested methods to increase trade including simplifying
border and customs procedures and creating unified quality control standards
among the member nations. The SCO was founded in 2001. Member states
include China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Mongolia and Iran retain observer status.
