Mongolia’s most prominent
author of children’s stories, Dashdondog Jamba, has arrived in the
U.S. to attend an annual writers’ conference held in Chautauqua, NY.
Jamba is the author of 50 children’s
books as well as 60 books of verse. He is also known worldwide for his
efforts to distribute books to Mongolian children.
Following the collapse of communism,
Jamba began a one-man crusade to bring books to rural Mongolian children.
“I realized that there were
no books for children anywhere in the country that were free of Communist
propaganda,” he told The River Reporter of New York state. “Also,
there were no schools or libraries that possessed good children’s
literature. So, I decided to publish as many of my books as I could
afford and began to take them around the country. I also translated
other author’s books and added them to the mobile library.”
“I bought an ox cart and
began taking my books out into the country where most of the children
lived,” he said. Since the books were short, the children could read
them quickly. “I couldn’t leave the book behind because I had only
a limited supply, so I would spend a few days where there were a lot
of children.”
Following publicity from Japanese
television, Jamba became well-known throughout the world.
He takes particular pride that
U.S. First Lady Laura Bush, a former librarian, has read his stories.
Jamba will be speaking at
the annual conference sponsored by Highlights For Children, a publisher
of children’s literature located in Honesdale, PA.
