A Welsh university is planning
to build low-cost, futuristic housing for families living near Ulaanbaatar.
Sponsored by the University
of Glamorgan’s Centre for Engineering Research and Environmental Applications,
plans are underway to build domed shaped housing which is both low-cost
and environmentally friendly.
As an added benefit, the homes
are also described as “visually stunning.”
Project head, Professor Demetrios
Djialli, told the Western Mail, “These new housing developments will
comprise of innovative, wooden dome structures which have been developed
in Canada.
“This wholly sustainable
technology, which is designed to resist high seismic loads, provides
speedy economic and highly sustainable housing solutions.
“We will be working with
this technology and constructing a plan for an infrastructure for the
country. Our work is an excellent example of a Welsh Assembly Government
accredited centre of excellence whose work is now reaching a global
scale.”
The domed houses are constructed
of recycled waste timber. Plans call for using the design to also build
hospitals, schools, libraries, hotels and other buildings.
