Chinese workers are working hard at constructing
Mongolia’s tallest building. The 17-story office building
in Ulaanbaatar is tentatively being called the Shangri-La office center.
It is being built overlooking the capital city's main square, Sukhbaatar
Square.
The second largest company of Mongolia, MCS, is overseeing
construction using nearly all Chinese workers.
"They work on site in
two 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. They are the fastest workers
I've ever seen. The buildings grow like mushrooms," the Mongolian
deputy director, Enkhtsetseg, told the Sunday Morning Herald.
However, some resentment has
arisen among Mongolians because the nearly 600 workers who will eventually
be needed for the building will come only from China.
Suspicions of China have become
deeply ingrained in Mongolian society. A November 2005 survey found
Mongolians preferred, by a wide margin, Russia and the United States
as “foreign partners” over China.
