The American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS - www.mongoliacenter.org) in conjunction with the
Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and the US Department
of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is pleased to announce
the creation of the US-Mongolia Field Research Program to support academic
research projects in Mongolia by US and Mongolian students in summer or fall
2006.
The program is expected to support approximately 3 students from US universities
and 6 students from Mongolian universities to conduct field research in Mongolia
between May and December 2006. Applicants must be either US or Mongolian citizens
or permanent residents currently enrolled full-time in a university or college
in the United States or Mongolia. Undergraduate applicants must have at least
third year standing in their program, while graduate applicants can be at
a masters or pre-dissertation doctoral level.
(More information: www.mongoliacenter.org/fellowship/)
The student research work for the US-Mongolia Field Research Fellowship Program
must be conducted under the supervision of a Research Sponsor who plans to
be on site in Mongolia in summer 2006. No independent field research projects
by students will be supported under this fellowship. The Research Sponsor
should have previous experience conducting academic field research, and must
agree to oversee the student’s research project in the field including
a period of direct oversight. The field research project should last a minimum
of 6 weeks, and be conducted in Mongolia between May and December 2006. Mongolian
students are expected to work with a Research Sponsor from a US-based institution,
while US students may work with either US or Mongolia based Research Sponsors.
In their applications, students should propose a research project related
to an on-going or planned research effort conducted during summer 2006 in
Mongolia. The students will be asked to describe how their participation in
the project will support their educational and career goals, and how their
project supports the development of US-Mongolian cooperation and the field
of Mongolian Studies. Applicants are required to include a letter of support
from their Research Sponsor, who will be responsible for overseeing the students’
research program. Additional information on the program, an Application Package,
and the General Terms and Conditions of the awards, is available from the
ACMS offices or the ACMS website www.mongoliacenter.org.
For US based students, the program will provide up to $2000 to cover travel
expenses to and from Mongolia, and a $1000 stipend to cover in-country expenses
in Mongolia. Mongolian based students will receive a $1000 stipend to cover
expenses. The Research Sponsor will receive a $1000 honorarium to offset costs
associated with the students’ participation in the research activity.
Research projects in any field, including humanities, sciences and social
sciences are eligible. Final selection will be made by a selection committee,
and the students selected will reflect a diversity of academic levels, fields
of study, gender and other characteristics.
In conjunction with the student’s Researcher Sponsor, the ACMS offices
in the US and Ulaanbaatar will assist the students chosen for the program
to prepare for their program in Mongolia by providing pre-departure information
on Mongolia, helping with travel arrangements to and from Mongolia and within
the country. The Research Sponsor for each project will be responsible for
overseeing the students’ living arrangements and academic program during
their time at the research site.
All participants will be required to submit a final report on their field
experience that reflects on both their research program, and how the experience
might impact their academic and career development. A panel will be organized
at the 2007 Association of Asian Studies annual meeting to allow participants
an opportunity to report on their research experience.
Funding for the program is provided by the Council of American Overseas Research
Centers (CAORC) and the US State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural
Affairs.
Details on the program are available from the ACMS website, www.mongoliacenter.org,
or from the ACMS offices in Ulaanbaatar or at Western Washington University.
