U.S. soldiers join Mongolian soldiers in repairing Ulaanbaatar hospital PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 22 August 2007

As part of their activities in Khan Quest 2007, 13 U.S. soldiers from the Iowa-based 389th Engineer Battalion spent three weeks helping Mongolians remodel the Mongolian Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Ulaanbaatar.

Working together, Mongolian and American soldiers replaced and sealed windows to keep out the winter cold and rewired much of the hospital’s antiquated electrical system.

“It was pretty well run-down,” soldier Ken Horstman told the Bettendorf News. “We had lights that didn’t work, fixtures that were broken and an electrical box that would have never (been allowed) back in the States. It was extremely hazardous.”

Horstman noted that differences in language was a major problem during their work.

“Myself and some of the other guys picked up a translating book,” he said. “We just kind of pointed to words in the book and said, ‘This is what I’m looking for.’ ”

Horstman remarked that he and his troops taught electrical wiring to Mongolian troops. From the Mongolians, the Americans said they learned superior cement and mortar techniques.

Participating countries in Khaan Quest 2007 included Mongolia, Republic of Korea, Bangladesh, Tonga, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia and the United States.
