Observers believe Mongolia
may play host to normalization talks between Japan and North Korea as
early as September.
North Korean representative
Song Il-ho visited Ulaanbaatar in mid-July while seeking a location
for the next round of normalization talks.
While Song was recently spotted
by reporters in China, knowledgeable sources have ruled out China hosting
the talks between Japan and North Korea.
The normalization talks are
part of a six-nation agreement signed earlier. The first talks were
held in March in Hanoi. However, they were terminated early when Japan
would not put off discussions of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North
Korea during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
North Korea anticipates receiving
up to $10 billion in compensation for the Japanese occupation of the
Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
North Korea has allowed five
of the abducted Japanese to return to Japan and claim the remaining
eight had died in North Korea.
However, Japan continues pressing
the issue as they believe more Japanese are being held against their
will in North Korea.
