Asashoryu’s return to Mongolia; Japan collects 30 million yen in taxes from Mongolian sumo champion |

 There is good news and bad
news for Mongolian sumo champion Asashoryu.
The good news is that the Japan
Sumo Association may meet as early as Tuesday to allow Asashoryu to
return to Mongolia. Asashoryu has remained in his Japanese home suffering
from depression since being temporarily suspended by the sumo association.
The bad news for Asashoryu
came in the way of a bill for unpaid taxes.
Japanese tax officials claim
Asashoryu failed to declare some 100 million yen in taxable income from
2002 through 2005. However, sources close to Asashoryu say he has already
paid the bill of some 30 million yen to the Japanese government.
Asashoryu had received permission
to not participate in summer sumo tournaments so he could recover in
Mongolia from wrestling-related injuries. However, a scandal shook the
sumo wrestling world when Asashoryu was seen playing soccer at a charity
event while he was supposed to be recuperating.
He was subsequently suspended
from fall sumo tournaments by the Japan Sumo Association.
