Contractor chosen to supervise construction of hydroelectric station PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 20 September 2007
ImageFinland-based Poyry contactors have been awarded a 3 million euro contract to supervise construction of Mongolia’s largest hydroelectric station.

The project site is located 300 km north of Ulaanbaatar near the point where the Selenge River meets Lake Baikal. Plans call for a 90 meter high dam and a 210 MW power station.

This project is the first large hydropower station in Mongolia, increasing the country's electrical generating capacity by 20 per cent. Officials hope this will reduce the country’s dependence on expensive energy supplies from Siberia. The plant will begin delivering electricity in 2013.

Poyry has been involved in Mongolian hydro and thermal power issues for many years. Additionally, Poyry has prepared numerous studies and plans for this project going back to 1993.

The contract was awarded by the Energy Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Mongolia.
