Twenty-two new plant species
have been discovered in mountains bordering Mongolia, Russia and China.
For three years, scientists
from Russia and China have explored the border mountain of Altai. The
group included six botanists from Russia and China.
Altai, also known as the Golden
Mountains, travels through China, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia for
over 2,000 km. Chinese and Russian scientists observed many of the 2,000
plant species in the region as well as rare and endangered animal species
such as the snow leopard.
Prior to the Chinese-Russian
expedition, the only other scientific study of the mountainous region
occurred in 1955.
Scientists hope this large
scale exploration of Altai will help to document the plant population
of the area and work to protect those species considered endangered.
