Hundreds of thousands of Chinese-made
autos may eventually be shipped to Europe using Mongolian rail lines.
The Netherlands-based Koopman
Logistics Group has created a joint venture with European, CIS and Asian
rail freight service provider InterRail (part of Swiss international
transport and logistics group TransInvest) to establish rail service
between China and Europe for the automotive industry.
Initial problems confronted
by Chinese automakers when selling in Europe included an inability to
pass collision tests as well as Chinese cars producing higher auto emissions
than European Union regulations allow.
However, industry analysts
believe China will overcome these problems and become a worldwide manufacturer
of autos.
Ernst Cooiman, managing director
of the Koopman car terminal told CargoNewsAsia,
"From China, though, rail
solutions are a good possibility, especially from inland plants to Russia
and CIS countries. At the moment, there is still railway capacity available,
although there is a growing shortage of platform wagons and railcars
to carry vehicles."
"Most car manufacturers
in China have now changed their strategies and delayed their exports
to Western Europe for three to five years," said Cooiman. "But
we are convinced that within a few years the export of Chinese vehicles
to Western Europe will start to grow significantly."
