A former government public
relations official, who had been sentenced to jail for criminal defamation,
has had his sentenced reduced to a fine.
N. Demberel, former chief of
the Cabinet media and public relations office, had been sentenced in
August to four months in jail for defaming President N. Enkhbayar and
Member of Parliament Ch. Ulaan.
This followed a newspaper article
and television program, both written by Demberel, criticizing these
public officials. Both officials filed a complaint claiming Demberel’s
reports had defamed them and damaged their reputations.
Despite the first trial being
opened to the public, the only media outlet allowed into the courtroom
was "Zuuni Shuudan" ("The Century Post").
Following the first trial,
members of Mongolian media held a press conference criticizing the verdict
and claiming the case had a negative effect on press freedoms.
In an appeal, Demberel’s
sentence was commuted to a fine of over $8,000 on October 11.
