Prime Minister Enkhbold out as head of MPRP; Sanj Bayar elected party chief PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 October 2007
ImageMongolian Prime Minister Miyeegombiin Enkhbold lost his position as head of the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party during a party vote on Friday.

Party Secretary Sanj Bayar was elected to the position in what was called a close vote.

The party congress, which opened on Monday, was held in Ulaanbaatar. It had been the intention of party delegates to elect party leaders prior to Mongolian parliamentary elections next spring.

Established in 1921, the MPRP is Mongolia’s oldest and largest political party with 160,000 members. It ruled the country during the years of Soviet domination.

The MPRP currently holds 39 seats in the 76-member parliament, allowing it to form a ruling coalition in January 2006 with Enkhbold as Prime Minister.
