Mongolian education officials
have ordered up to 10,000 laptop computers for $200 each.
The computers are being manufactured
by the One Laptop Per Child Foundation. The original intent was to sell
the computers for $100 each. However, production costs have prevented
the foundation from reaching its hoped-for price.
According to the foundation,
the $200 price tag for a fully functional computer can only be purchased
in lots of 10,000.
Foundation officials are hopeful
that as orders come in for the computers, the price will drop to $100
each. The computers are being manufactured in China.
Besides Mongolia, orders have
also been received from Uruguay and Peru.
