Officials are reporting
that former Mongolian Prime Minister Janlaviin Narantsatsralt died in
a car crash Monday night. Narantsatsralt, 50, was
Mongolia’s acting Minister of Construction and City Planning, after the cabinet officially resigned last week. Narantsatsralt
reportedly died when the car he was in overturned in Tov province in
central Mongolia. Another person in the car also died. He is the second
former prime minister to die in a month time after P. Jasrai died
during the MPRP congress on October 25th. As Mongolia’s new
democracy entered a crisis period, Narantsatsralt served as prime
minister for eight months beginning in late 1998. Prior to becoming Prime
Minister, Narantsatsralt had been mayor of Ulaanbaatar. He was
elected Prime Minister only after the Parliament had been unable to
elect a Prime Minister during a seven month crisis. Born in 1957,
Narantsatsralt was educated in Moscow and became a land policy
expert. Following his brief stint as Prime Minister, he became a
university instructor. He was then elected to Parliament in 2000.
