A New Zealand investment fund
will boycott Mongolian companies because of the government’s support
of commercial whaling.
The Global Deep Green Trust,
which has had an impressive 19.8 percent return for investors, has announced
it will not invest in any Mongolian companies following Mongolia’s
voting to resume commercial whaling at the International Whaling Commission.
Fund Manager Peter Hall said
the anti-whaling stance was designed to protest the renewal of worldwide
whaling.
"It is indeed difficult
to make this decision as some of the world's most highly advanced and
economically prospective states are on this list. However, the slaughter
of these highly intelligent, beautiful and endangered creatures is horrifying
and disgusting and it must be stopped both as an evil in itself and
as a signifier of man's relationship to the planet," he told the
Sunday Star Times.
Besides Mongolia, other countries
being boycotted due to their support of commercial whaling include Japan,
Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Russia, Cameroon, Gabon, Myanmar, Nauru, Cambodia,
Kiribati, Morocco and Mali.
