Tuesday, 20 November 2007
ImageFollowing outbreaks of equine influenza across the border in China, Mongolia now reports seven infected horses within Mongolia.

Of the 101,587 horses at risk in China’s near-by Xinjiang province, 11,600 horses have been infected and nine horses have died, according to the Office International des Epizooties (OIE).

ImageThe first outbreak in China was reported on October 26. Officials believe the spread of the disease will strike 11.45 percent of the entire horse population. However, it is expected that few horses will die from the disease.

Mongolia’s last outbreak of equine influenza was in 2005.

Mongolian official, Doloonjin Orgil, PhD, director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture Department of Veterinary Services is maintaining contact with international organizations regarding the influenza.
