Mongolia is in attendance at
the World Health Organization Regional Outbreak Communication Conference
in Brunei. The goal of the conference is to create systems to communicate
across borders following the outbreak of communicable diseases.
"Risk communication, the
subject matter of this workshop ….. is certainly an integral part
in the prevention or mitigation of adverse human health outcomes following
exposure to hazardous situations. Its role in protecting human health
and determining the outcome is therefore critical both to individuals
as well as communities collectively," Pekin Osman, Brunei’s Minister
of Health, told the Borneo Bulletin.
In meeting in Brunei, WHO officials
hope to share expertise learned in the successful fight against disease.
Officials noted that Brunei
has reduced infant immortality rates to 7.4 per 1,000 infants in 2005
compared with 150 per 1,000 in 1951. Another achievement is in life
expectancy where Brunei has recorded a figure of 74.3 for men and 77.3
for women in 2005, while the figure recorded 35 years ago was 62.
In terms of communicable diseases,
WHO officials said Brunei has been free of malaria for the past two
decade and Brunei has taken a lead in preparing for possible outbreaks
of diseases such as HIV and Avian Influenza.
