Mongolia’s Asashoryu to return to Japan November 30 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 November 2007
ImageMongolian Sumo Grand Champion, Asashoryu, is reportedly to travel from Mongolia to Japan on November 30. This will be the first time he has returned to Japan since the controversy resulting in his being temporarily suspended from sumo wrestling.

Asashoryu, 27, will participate in the New Year’s sumo tournament in January, according to a spokeswoman for the Japan Sumo Association.

"We had aimed at November 26 but he couldn't make it then because of his visa situation," stable master Takasago told the Kyodo news agency.

Asashoryu plans on holding a news conference the day he returns to Japan, after first meeting sumo elders, Kyodo reported.

Asashoryu became the first Sumo Grand Champion to be suspended following a controversy this past August. Claiming medical problems, Asashoryu did not participate in summer Sumo tournaments. However, while supposed to be recovering in Mongolia, he was seen participating in a soccer game.

Following an investigation, the Japan Sumo Association suspended Asashoryu from wrestling in two tournaments.
