China’s Shenhua Energy hopes to mine coke in Mongolia
Thursday, 22 November 2007
China’s Shenhua Energy Co.,
Ltd. is seeking to purchase the rights to develop coke mine in Mongolia.
The coke mine Shenhua will
develop is located in Ömnögovi Aimag, only 100 kilometers from China.
If Shenhua is able to negotiate the agreement, they have announced plans
to build a 500 kilometer rail link to a site in China’s Inner Mongolia
province.
Shenhua officials said they
hope to extract over 10 million tons of coke from the Ömnögovi Aimag
site.
"We are not sure how much
coke we can purchase from the coal mine. It depends upon the Mongolian
government. Also, the government has not decided whether we will be
the sole contractors for the project or whether other companies will
do a deal as well," Huang Qing, secretary to the board of directors
of Shenhua Energy, told the China Internet Information Center.
Industry officials were quick
to mention that this acquisition would be China’s Shenhua Energy’s
first mine purchased outside of China.
