A rare Mongolian vulture, which
drew international attention in Thailand last spring, has apparently
been killed by a hunter.
A photo from a soldier in Myanmar's
Shan State showed the dead vulture.
The Mongolian vulture was found
near death in southeastern Thailand last December. Nursed back to health
by officials, the bird was to be flown to its native Mongolia. However,
fears of avian flu prevented China and South Korea from allowing the
bird to be returned by air.
"There remains a bad perception
about vultures. We have to change that," veterinarian Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua
told AHN Media Corp. on Thursday, adding he received an e-mail in July
from the rebel soldier who said a villager had killed the bird.
Photos of the vulture's radio
transmitter and leg band confirmed what Chaiyan called "a tragedy."
