Mongolian officials have pledged
to raise hygiene and sanitation standards in the country, particularly
among the poorest populations.
Mongolian representatives set
goals for achieving increased national sanitation while participating
in the just-concluded Ministerial Conference on Sanitation and Hygiene
in Beppu City of Japan.
As part of Mongolia’s commitment
to meet Millennium Development Goals established by the World Bank,
it was agreed to increase funding in sanitation and hygiene promotion.
Mongolia further agreed that
particular focus needs to see to the needs of the poor and marginalized
who face the worst conditions and the most limited access to adequate
sanitation.
"Improving the level
of investment in sanitation and hygiene promotion in our respective
countries, while maintaining commensurate investments in domestic water
supply," was a declared goal placed in writing at the meeting.
The conference also stressed
the need to reach out to women, which they called crucial to realizing
sanitation and hygiene gains.
Mongolia also committed ministers
and decision-makers to work to equip schools and health care facilities
with sanitation facilities.
