Pope Benedict XVI received his representative to Mongolia this week and issued a message to the people of Mongolia.

Meeting with as Wenceslao Padilla, apostolic prefect in Ulaanbaatar, the Pope praised the return of Catholicism to Mongolia following the end of Soviet rule.

“Throughout the ages Asia has given the Church and the world a host of heroes of the faith,” said the Pope.

Recalling the arrival of Mongolia’s first missionaries 400 years ago, and their return to Mongolia only 15 years ago, the Pope acknowledged that the growth of Asian Churches “is due in no small part to the outstanding witness of …martyrs and others throughout Asia who remained steadfastly faithful to Christ and his Church.”

“I join you in urging the laity, and in a special way the young people in your region, to explore the depth and breadth of our Eucharistic communion,” he said.
