Train to link Mongolia with South Korea crosses into North Korea for first time |

 The long-awaited rail link
between North and South Korea began operating on Wednesday and promises
to ultimately provide a rail link from South Korea to Mongolia.
For the first time in five
decades, a train passed from South Korea into North Korea. The 12-car
train, carrying only freight, crossed the demilitarized zone to reach
the North's border station of Panmun.
The train is expected to eventually
reach Mongolia and continue on to Russia.
South Korean officials also
said they are looking forward to offering passenger service between
the two Koreas. "Though we start with a cargo train, it will lead
to a passenger train service," Lee Churl, the chief executive of
the Korea Railroad Corp, told the United Press International.
"The joint industrial
park connected by cross-border train service will also help South Korea
accomplish its ambitious plan to transform itself into a logistics and
business hub of the Asia-Pacific region," said Lee Hyung-keun,
an economist at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy.
