A Mongolian actor was recognized at the recently completed Third Asian Festival of First Films.

Batzul Khayankhyarvaa of Mongolia received the Best Male Performance award for his starring role in the film “Khadak.”

The film is a study of the impact of modernization upon Mongolians. Batzul plays a nomad whose family is removed from its grazing lands and sent to a mining community to live.

Batzul portrays a man having visions of a doomed future as his family is offered employment in mining. Batzul eventually goes mad due to the visions.

Khadak was written and directed by Peter Brosens and Jessica Hope Woodworth

Besides Batzul Khayankhyarvaa, acting in the film are Tsetsegee Byamba, Dugarsuren Dagvadorj, Banzar Damchaa and Tserendarizav Dashnyam.

During the Stalinist purges of the 1930's almost every monastery in Mongolia was destroyed. In 1979 an atlas was published in Ulaanbaatar by Mr. Rinchen with an overview of more than 900 religious sites that used to exist in Mongolia. However a lot the information listed seems to be not accurate. A research has been initiated to get a better idea of all the buddhist buildings that once stood in Mongolia.
