ImageCanadian media reported that the first baby born in the western province of Saskatoon in 2008 belongs to a Mongolian couple.

A baby girl named Zol Paula Boldsaikhan was born at 3:19 a.m., weighing seven pounds.

The father Boldsaikhan Usukh, arrived in Saskatoon in 2006 to study for a master’s degree in soil science. Later in 2006, his wife, Enkhsuren Byambaa, followed from Mongolia with their son, Erkhem, who is now six years old.

According to Usukh, his wife spent December 31 preparing a large family meal to celebrate New Years Eve. Instead, they arrived at Royal University Hospital at midnight, only three hours before their baby was born.

In choosing the baby’s names, the couple chose Zol, which  means "best of luck" in Mongolian. For a middle name, the family asked the hospital staff for suggestions for a Canadian middle name. It was agreed that Paula would work to honor Dr. Paula Schwann who delivered the baby.
