As internet usage soars thru Asia, report shows Mongolia lagging behind PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 January 2008
A recently published report shows home internet usage surging throughout Asia, with the only exceptions being Mongolia and China.

The report, North Asian Broadband and Internet Market Report 2007, shows internet penetration in many Asian nations at well over 70 percent of homes. However, in Mongolia the number of homes with internet access remains at ten percent and in China at eleven percent.

Countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and even Macau show internet usage averaging between seventy to ninety percent of all homes. Additionally, Hong Kong has home internet penetration at over 90 percent.

The report noted that Japan is leading the way with fibre-optic transmission of internet signals, with over 10 million homes using this most advanced technology.

While China has a small percentage of homes wired for internet usage, its sheer numbers and growing momentum to provide internet service makes it a formidable user of internet services in the very near future.

By early 2007, the number of internet subscribers in China had passed 140 million (11 percent penetration). This represented about 12 percent of the world’s total users.

Also, though penetration remains comparatively low (4 percent), by early 2007, broadband in China was growing at an annual rate of 35 percent.

With 56.3 million broadband subscribers by March 2007, China had the second most broadband services in the world after the U.S. (60.3 million).
