Parliament to discuss a contract for 285 million US dollars today PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 January 2008

First steps in receiving 285 million US dollars from MCC have been done. Yesterday discussions to approve the contract were held by the Security and Foreign Affairs Standing Committee. Today it has been passed to be discussed by the parliament. 189 million USD of the total 285 million USD are planned to be allocated to the Mongolian Railway and rest to be spent on education and health. USA’s MCC fund has contracts with 16 countries which have received monetary grants so far.

Hm, Mongolian railway is partially owned by Russians! So, investing in a railway does not make sense for contributing to Mongolia really.
I hope the money be spent wisely, not for feeding corrupt officials. Anyway, how U.S.A. will chekc if their money is spent in right places and how they prevent from corruption? No-one likes to feed corrupts, I wish.

Good point. Rail improvement is needed and useful to commerce but certainly there are many areas of importance with regards to development.
Most of the governments are corrupt so when I slant comments at Mongolian officials I always do so understanding that the US's are as bad or worse. Guess for some reason I have more hope and expectation for Mongolia, its leaders and people.
I too hope checks and balances are better implemented and exercised for this and all transactions.
