Gold Medal for Mongolian Contortionists in Monte Carlo PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 February 2006
Culture.mn reports: A group of Mongolian contortionists have won the gold medal for young at the annual International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo (http://www.montecarlofestivals.com), held under the auspices of H.S.H. Princess Stephanie. Performing as the ensemble "three pairs", the contortionists were trained by Mongolian State Laureate D. Majigsuren. Mongolian circus performers have had repeated success at the Monte Carlo festival, with bronze, silver and gold medals earned in previous festivals for acrobatics, tightrope walking, and contortion events.
In related news, the newspaper "Daily News" reports that Gerta and Prete, two Russian elephants who were brought to Ulaanbaatar for a recent series of performances at the Mongolian National Circus, have been unable to return home due to the sudden spell of cold weather. Keeping the elephants is no small task for Mongolia's circus, as each of the two animals consumes 100 kilograms of food every day - in addition to sharing a bottle of red wine and a bottle of "Yeruul" vodka. A special insulated train is expected to come from Irkutsk to collect the visiting elephants by the end of the week.
