The horse flu which spread
through neighboring China earlier in 2007, has now infected more
than 60,000 horses across the border in Mongolia.
Called equine influenza virus,
horse flu can be fatal to horses if not treated in time. However, the
disease cannot be contracted by humans.
While only 21 Mongolian horses
have died from the disease since the outbreak began in October, more
than 30,000 horses have been quarantined.
Raising horses is a major industry
throughout Mongolia, which now has a population of over 2 million horses.
