Computers for Mongolian children take giant step towards reality following successful fundraising PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 January 2008
ImageOfficials of a campaign to purchase laptop computers for Mongolian children, along with those in other countries, announced they raised $35 million for computer purchases during the Christmas holiday season.

Located in the Boston-area in the United States, the One Laptop Per Child campaign said it raised the money this past November and December.

The XO laptops, designed by the organization, are currently costing just under $200 to manufacture. However, the organization said its goal is to decrease the cost to $100 once the computer goes into mass production.

OLPC founder, Nicholas Negroponte, said his organization was thankful for the outpouring of donations, which he said "will get laptops into the hands of as many underprivileged children as possible."

The laptop computers, which will be distributed in Mongolia, will operate using the Linux operating system. The XO laptops are designed to be particularly energy-efficient and able to withstand extreme heat and humidity and can be powered manually by a child.
