The Asian Development Bank
(ADB) is currently conducting a survey to understand the impact of the
ongoing migration of rural Mongolians into the country’s cities.
The ADB reports that initial
findings indicate that the majority of the new arrivals are hoping to
escape rural poverty. Most suffer from unemployment and an inability
to receive adequate health care after arriving in cities.
Within Ulaanbaatur, the survey
has found that 27 percent of the population lives in poverty.
Following its evaluating the
data, ADB officials will propose specific programs for the government
to undertake to assist the most vulnerable including the elderly, the
infirmed and the homeless.
