A freight service by rail,
traveling through Mongolia with a final stop in Germany, is scheduled
to begin operating in early 2009
Chinese media reports a test
run is currently underway, with a train traveling by rail from China
to Germany.
Freight from China currently
takes forty days to reach Europe by cargo vessel. The rail service is
expected to take only twenty days.
The Beijing to Hamburg route
will travel through China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany.
After the test run, participating governments will meet to evaluate
how to speed up the service by creating uniform border regulations,
among other suggestions.
"Barring any complications,
a scheduled container train should be shuttling between China and Germany
in a year's time," China Railway Container Transport chairman Zheng
Mingli told the BBC.
